Stop Being Busy: The proven way to start building something real
I once paid $200 to learn how to use Instagram Reels. But what I really learned was that I needed to stop being busy and start building something real. I just didn’t know it yet.
Let me explain.
I had been paying $50 a month to be part of a membership. A “society.” The kind with a cute name and a private community and a creator you really like who sends you things to think about. I was barely logging in, but I was paying, and somehow that felt like participation.
Then she announced a new course. Early bird pricing. A bonus if you jumped in fast.
So I jumped.
$200 to learn Instagram Reels. Live trainings every day. Homework. A whole curriculum. And I was going to show up for all of it, on top of being a mom and a wife and running my actual business and doing all the things that life requires on a daily basis.
I want to be honest about how that went.
It did not go well.
I was exhausted within the first week. Scrambling to catch the live trainings, falling behind on the homework, feeling guilty every time I missed something. All that effort. All that money. And all that showing up for something that had nothing to do with where I actually was or where I was actually going.
Because I wasn’t even on Instagram.
I wasn’t building a presence there, wasn’t selling anything there, and had no audience there. I thought that maybe if I paid for the class, the consistency would follow. That the course would be the thing that finally got me moving.
Here’s the truth about what I was actually doing.
I was being busy. Very, very busy. But I was not building anything.
That’s the difference. And it’s a sneaky one, because busy feels productive. Courses feel like investment. Showing up for live trainings feels like commitment. None of it feels like spinning your wheels until you’re on the other side of it, looking back, doing the math on the time and money and energy you spent and asking yourself what you actually have to show for it.
I had a notebook full of notes about a platform I wasn’t using.
That was it.
So why does this keep happening? The problem wasn’t the course. The course was probably fine. The problem was that I had no filter. No clear picture of where I was going or what actually belonged in my business at that stage. So when something shiny showed up with an early bird bonus and a creator I liked, it looked like the thing. It felt like the move.
It wasn’t.
The truth is, building something real requires direction first. Not more courses, not more memberships, not more strategies from people whose business looks nothing like yours. What it actually requires is a clear, honest picture of where you are, where you’re going, and what belongs between here and there.
Without that filter, you can’t stop being busy even when you want to. Everything looks like progress. Everything feels like it could be the thing. And so everything goes on the list and into the calendar and onto the credit card.
Until you look up and realize nothing actually moved.
The shift for me wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t one big decision or one perfect system. It was simply asking a different question. Instead of “what should I add?” I started asking “what actually belongs?” And that one question is what finally helped me stop being busy and start building something that was actually going anywhere.
Everything else is just noise.
